Mahale Chimpanzee Centre
In 2011, Frankfurt Zoological Society approached d u s t to design a research and conservation centre in a remote part of Western Tanzania. Intended for PhD students studying the behaviour of chimpanzees, the facility’s location was difficult to get to and, despite being situated next to a lake, had very little fresh drinking water due to an infestation of bilharzia. The challenge for our team was to design a building that would make the most of natural resources and help provide enough clean water for the facility. We came up with the idea of a series of standalone V-shaped frames to catch as much rainwater as possible for consumption by people carrying out research in the buildings beneath them.
